Works at Metro Tunnel Arden Station in West Melbourne have progressed to the extent that above ground streetscape changes are now underway.
These will result in periodic impacts on, and detours of, bike movements in the precinct over the coming months.
From today the southbound bicycle lane on Laurens Street, between Arden and Queensberry streets will be closed, with a bicycle detour via Dryburgh Street.
Crews will install waterfilled traffic barriers on Thursday 30 March from 7:00am on the north-eastern side of Laurens Street between Arden and Barwise streets.
Pedestrian access on the eastern pedestrian footpath will be maintained until late May while works continue along the western side of Laurens Street.
The project will be undertaking public realm, road and footpath redevelopment works on the north-eastern side of Laurens Street between Arden and Barwise streets until August.
These works will involve locating underground services with a non-destructive digging truck, removing asphalt with an excavator and undertaking drainage and services modifications.
Following these works, bluestone kerbing and asphalt will be installed to redevelop the north-eastern footpath and southbound traffic lane on Laurens Street between Barwise and Arden streets.
Road users will notice the northbound and southbound lane on Laurens Street shifted slightly to the west to maintain two-way traffic movement for vehicles.
As well as drainage modifications, contractors will be applying asphalt to the north-eastern pedestrian footpath on Laurens Street between Barwise and Arden streets.
From late May until August, the eastern footpath will close, and pedestrians will be detoured down the western side of Laurens Street
The southbound bicycle lane on Laurens Street will be closed with southbound bike riders detoured down Dryburgh Street.
On street parking on the north-western side of Laurens Street between Barwise and Arden streets will be permanently removed to make way for the permanent public realm design.
Access to businesses will be maintained and signage will be in place to safely direct vehicles, bikes and pedestrians around the work area
Construction works will be carried out during standard working hours (from 7:00am to 6:00pm Monday to Friday and from 7:00am to 1:00pm Saturdays).
