Pump station works at Southbank

A project to upgrade the pumps that keep Crown Casino from flooding will get underway at the end of the month on the Yarra Promenade at Southbank, creating some disturbances for bike and pedestrian traffic.

Melbourne Water manages the pumping station and its now 30-year-old set of pumps are hidden underneath the raised bluestone platform at the Yarra River near Clarendon Street.

The enclosure also houses the electrical switchboard and control systems, which need replacement and will be relocated to a higher level to account for climate change and future one-in-100-year storm events.

The construction activities will be within the enclosure area, but the area will be fenced off from the promenade, slightly narrowing the corridor.

The works will start in late April and are expected to be completed by the end of October 2023.

Work hours will be between 7am and 6pm each weekday and 7am to 1pm on Saturdays.
