New Auburn crossing hints at future route

A proposed signal crossing at Auburn Road near the railway station has immediate and future benefits for bike riders.

Getting across Auburn Road in the village to get to or from Auburn station can be difficult when traffic is busy and fast, which is much of the time.

Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) concept plans for a new raised signal crossing just south of the existing rail bridge look set to solve the problem.

The project will also widen the footpath, shorten the route 624 bus stop, and alter car parking provision.

The proposed location also supports the preferred alignment identified in the Box Hill to Hawthorn Trail feasibility study.

The trail, which is well considered and forward-thinking, will run south of the railway line along Lilydale Grove, cross Auburn Road and run along laneways and a track to George Street, before traversing the Swinburne University precinct.

DPT states: "A high-quality pedestrian network is a fundamental building block of the transport network and helps people make active transport choices that reduce transport congestion, minimise emissions and support vibrant economic precincts."

DPT is seeking community feedback on the proposal. For more information and to comment go to: https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/planning-and-projects/melbourne-road-projects/improving-safety-for-pedestrians-on-auburn-road
