Rainforest MTB project kicks off in Queensland

Work is underway on a network of mountain bike trails that will take thrillseekers through Australia's longest stretch of subtropical rainforest.

The Pioneer Valley Mountain Bike Trail project in North Queensland is a grand plan to make the town of Finch Hatton, inland of Mackay, a world-class mountain biking destination.

Once complete, the Pioneer Valley Mountain Bike Trails will comprise around 95km of single-direction trails built to international standard, which will snake across the lush valleys between Finch Hatton and the nearby town of Eungella.

The $27 million network will include 40 trails ranging from easy, to intermediate to difficult, and offer something for riders of all abilities.

Stage one of the project kicked off this month in the mountains around Finch Hatton. It will include a pump track and 13.5km of airflow trails in the neighbouring hills.

The second stage of the project will focus on the 82km of trails between Finch Hatton and Eungella. It will take riders through Eungella National Park to Crediton State Forest, traversing lush subtropical rainforest.

A secondary trailhead will be built in Eungella which, with Finch Hatton, will act as a key service hub for the trails.

“Imagine pedalling through amazing landscapes, exploring trails of varying degrees and finishing up in the townships of Finch Hatton and Eungella and enjoying a cold beverage," says Mackay Mayor Greg Williamson. "It’s the perfect backdrop for any mountain bike rider."

The Mackay Regional Council projects that within 10 years the Pioneer Valley Mountain Bike Trails will attract more than 30,000 riders a year, including 5000 overseas visitors. It estimates that this will bring an additional $18 million in economic benefits to the region each year.

Stage 1 is expected to be complete by the end of 2023, and the detailed designs for Stage 2 will follow.
