Be bright and in the right

One in 3 bike riders don’t have adequate lights on their bikes for riding in low-light conditions, Bicycle Network Super Counts have revealed.

Victorian road rules require all riders to carry and use front and rear lights when riding in dark conditions or at night so they can be safely seen by other road users.

Riders must use a white front light and a red rear light, which are visible from at least 200 metres away and a red rear reflector that is visible from at least 50 metres away.

The rules vary in other states, but they are similar to the Victorian rules.

Penalties for riding a bicycle at night without lights can range from $231 to $925 in Victoria.

Bicycle Network will hand out free bike lights to riders for the next two weeks. Meet us at the following dates and times:

  • Thursday 6 July, 7am-9am, Queensbridge Square, 3 Queens Bridge Street, Southbank
  • Thursday 13 July, 4.30pm-6.30pm, Queensbridge Square. 3 Queens Bridge Street, Southbank
  • Wednesday 23 August, 4pm-7pm, Queensbridge Square, 3 Queens Bridge Street, Southbank
