Riders are warned to take care around Grattan Street near Melbourne University during the final phase of construction above the new Parkville Station.
Intensive work including service relocations, footpath, kerb and road pavement construction, traffic signal modifications, and installation of bus stops, street furniture, lighting and landscaping is taking place until late October.
Riders are advised to take extra caution around footpath and building entrance works. Works will take place on the southern Grattan Street footpath, between Elizabeth and Barry streets from next week.
Traffic management will be in place to manage closures and diversions.
Works will be conducted from 7am to 6pm Monday to Friday, and 7am to 3pm on Saturdays. Night work, if required, will be from 6pm to 7am Monday to Friday.
The main activities involve:
- Site establishment, including removing water-filled barriers and installing temporary fencing and signage
- Removing the existing southern Grattan Street footpath between Elizabeth and Barry streets
- Installing new infrastructure, underground services and utilities, and street lighting
- Landscaping works including constructing the permanent bluestone footpath, adjacent kerbs, sections of roadway, and installing street furniture and bus stops.
The southern Grattan Street footpath, between Elizabeth and Barry streets, and alongside the Doherty Institute and Alan Gilbert Building, will be occupied during these works.
East-west pedestrian access between Elizabeth and Barry streets will be maintained via a minor diversion through the Grattan Street east site.
Access to the Doherty Institute’s Grattan Street entrance and 24/7 drop boxes will be maintained via the diversion.
Access to the Alan Gilbert Building’s Grattan Street entrance will be maintained via the diversion.
Concrete pours will take place intermittently throughout the works. During concrete pours, there will be short term closures of the pedestrian diversion.
During short-term closures, pedestrian diversions will be in place via Pelham, Berkeley Street and Barry streets, and Haymarket Walk.
Works on the northern Grattan Street footpath will then begin and be completed concurrently, with pedestrians diverted through the Grattan Street east site.
Access to and emergency egress from the University of Melbourne Medical Building will be maintained. Separate notification will be provided for these works.
