New station planned close to trail

The Djerring Rail Trail through Melbourne’s southeast will pass almost at the doorstep of the new Suburban Rail Loop station planned for Clayton.

SRL planners have proposed a plaza for the station between the station entrance and the trail, and an additional spur to connect riders to the bike parking at the underground station.

The underground rail loop crosses paths with the elevated Dandenong line at Clayton, where the Djerring Trail between Caulfield and (almost) Dandenong travels along the rail alignment.

The plaza will require the closure of a section of Carinish Road at Clayton Road.

The plan has been released for consultation and feedback has been requested.

The Suburban Rail Loop Authority says that closing a portion of Carinish Road in Clayton will allow a pedestrian plaza to provide easy and safe access between the new Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) East station at Clayton, the existing Clayton train station, and the nearby Clayton Activity Centre.

"The new underground SRL East station at Clayton will become a transport super hub, connecting more people to Clayton’s vibrant town centre and providing faster and more convenient access to destinations across Melbourne and the Gippsland region,” SRLA says.

The new Clayton station will be located north of Carinish Road and west of Clayton Road. A section of Carinish Road will be closed for up to 10 years to enable the safe construction of the new station, and is proposed to be closed permanently.

Access for local residents and businesses to Clayton Road will be maintained by upgrading the intersection of Clayton Road and Shandeau Avenue.

Bicycle Network believes the SRLA's consideration of close linkages between the busy bike path and the new station is a positive move for bike riders.

Detailed designs will need to take consideration of pedestrian and vehicle movements to and from the station to ensure any crossing points on the trail are not hazardous.
