Funding locked in for next stage of Yarra Valley Trail

Yarra Ranges Council has secured federal government funding for the next stage of the Yarra Valley Trail, envisioned as a game-changing network of bike trails through the region.

The $4.9 million in funding comes from the Australian government’s Priority Community Infrastructure Program, and will be used to construct Stage 2A of the roughly 7km trail between Yarra Glen and Tarrawarra, via the historic railway reserve.

The announcement marks a key milestone for the project, which is expected to generate 159 new jobs and inject $41.2 million into the local economy.

Once complete, the Yarra Valley Trail will connect Yarra Glen and Healesville to the popular Lilydale-Warburton Rail Trail, and loop in a number of towns and destinations along way.

The project has been a key Bicycle Network priority for more than a decade and enjoys strong support from the local community.

“This work will complement the considerable volunteer efforts of the Yarra Valley Railway, in restoring heritage rail services between Healesville and Yarra Glen,” says Yarra Ranges Mayor, Sophie Todorov.

"The work has been a heartening display of community spirit, passion and volunteerism, and we’re proud to work with YVR to make this trail a reality alongside their work.”

Works commenced on the first stage between Lilydale and Yering in 2019. Funding for Stage 2A was one of the key asks in Bicycle Network's 2022/23 Victorian Budget Submission.
