Heidelberg Road intersection upgrade

The dicey intersection at Station Street and Heidelberg Road in Fairfield is to set to receive significant safety improvements.

The project, which began this week, will include bike head-start lanterns, a bike box and electronic signage. The works will take about 12 weeks.

The intersection has long been challenging for riders as Station Street takes heavy traffic north to Bell Street. Cars turning into Station Street have  created dangerous conditions for riders.

The 2021 pop-up bike lane project delivered improvements, and various adjustments and tinkering have been undertaken since.

These latest changes are a major step up as the head-start bike lanterns help bikes get through the intersection before the rest of the traffic. The east-bound storage box will ensure riders are more visible at the lights. The installation of an electronic “watch for bikes” sign will supplement the measures.

Local detours will be in place, with signage and traffic management on site to help direct road users.

Works will take place between 9.30am and 3.30pm, outside peak commuting times.
