Make room for Moomba

Bike riders planning to travel through the city over the Labor Day long weekend should consider alternative routes, as huge crowds are anticipated for Moomba festivities.

Moomba 2024 will be held from Thursday 7 March until Monday 11 March and its footprint will encompass both sides of the Yarra River in Birrarung Marr and Alexandra Gardens.

This may impact the riding route along the Main Yarra Trail, and access to the Princes Bridge bike lanes, as the crowd swells over the weekend to take in carnival rides, fireworks, water skiing and other festivities.

Bike riders are advised to opt for routes that steer clear of congested areas at the southern end of Swanston Street and the Arts Centre precinct.

Set up is underway, and official event times for the weekend are as follows:

• Thursday 7 March: 4pm – 10pm
• Friday 8 March: 4pm – 10pm (relaxed hours from 4pm to 6pm)
• Saturday 9 March: 10am – 10pm
• Sunday 12 March: 10am – 10pm
• Monday 13 March: 10am – 10pm.
