Trail network plan for Peninsula

Mornington Peninsula Shire is working on a plan for a network of trails across the region.

The peninsula has terrific potential for active travel and has some great sections of trails for bikes, walkers and horses, but a proper network is yet to be realised and there are numerous gaps that frustrate end-to-end trips.

The council has released a plan to implement a more systematic approach by prioritising and evaluating sections to realise a connected network.

Consultation is open for riders to design the plan and provide feedback here: https://shape.mornpen.vic.gov.au/a-strategic-plan-for-peninsula-trails

The council says it wants an "experience for residents and visitors to our region that goes beyond active living, connecting townships and delivering a host of economic, social, environmental and cultural benefits”.

The Peninsula Trails Strategic Plan consists of three parts:

  • Strategic framework: incorporates guiding principles for the project and a vision for the peninsula trails.
  • Trails overview: outlines trail types, potential user groups, opportunities and characteristics of each section.
  • Implementation plan: includes 48 recommendations on the delivery of the trails, presented in phases of activity and priority.

"Our priority is ensuring all potential opportunities and benefits of the trails are identified and supported, whilst providing an essential tool to guide short and long-term investment and decision-making for an iconic trail experience," a council statement says.

"This enables the trail to be properly planned, developed, and activated in a unified way, delivering multiple benefits for the community."
