Snowy River bridge works underway

Work is underway on the first phase of the restoration of the historic trestle railway bridge which will form part of the East Gippsland Rail Trail at Orbost.

At 770 metres long, the 1916 wooden crossing will be a highlight of trips along the trail.

Preliminary works have been underway on access to both ends of the bridge, car parks, and interpretation signage.

The Snowy Rail Bridge Association plans to open access from both the Orbost and the Newmeralla ends of the bridge so that the public can walk from each end to a viewing platform.

The second phase will include works for stabilisation and repair, and new decking and safety rails for riders and walkers.

The incorporation of the trail onto the bridge is likely some time off and will require further funding.

This community-led project has received financial support from the Victorian Government via its Gippsland Tourism Recovery Package, and the federal government via its Black Summer Bushfire Recovery Grants Program.
