Protected bike lane extends in Perth

The Perth suburb of Carlisle is in the midst of a makeover that will soon mean smooth moving for bike riders.

The Town of Victoria Park is revitalising the main thoroughfare through Carlisle, which consists of Archer and Mint Streets and connects the Albany Highway with Orrong Road, cutting through the town centre along the way.

Protected bike lanes running nearly the entire length of Archer and Mint streets will be one big win for the community, improving access to the new Carlisle train station, schools and local businesses.

Once complete, the protected bike lane will run between Gemini Way and Hubert Street. The route is a part of the WA Government’s Long Term Cycle Network blueprint for a continuous bike network in the Perth and Peel region.

The bike lanes and streetscape upgrades are being constructed in stages.

The first Carlisle lane is complete and the council says it has already decreased traffic speeds through the town centre by 6.6%, boosted tree canopy coverage from 17% to 40% and decreased the street surface temperature.

Works are now underway on the second stage, while the timeline for the third and final stage is still to be determined.

The Town of Victoria Park conducted consultation with the community in 2020 unearthed some key priorities for the Archer Mint Streetscape Improvement Plan.

These include increasing shading and tree canopy, improving walkability and vibrancy around local businesses, and improving safety and access for alternative modes of transport.
