Night closure of Swanston St bike lane

Work will be underway over the next month to widen the kerbs at the busy north-east corner of Swanston and La Trobe Streets as part of the Melbourne Metro State Library Station development.

The intersection, which carries huge volumes of pedestrians and has bike lanes on both legs, is usually hectic.

Construction activity will be 24 hourly from Monday to Saturday for four weeks, or until complete.

Riders heading southbound into the city will have access during the day, but the bike lane will be closed from 9pm to 6am Monday to Saturday .

During the night works bike riders travelling southbound on Swanston Street will be required to stop and walk their bikes a short distance along the Swanston Street footpath.

Note that during the project the southbound bicycle lane on Swanston Street will be narrowed on the approach to La Trobe Street, so additional care will be required.

During the works, any motorists travelling southbound on Swanston Street will be unable to turn left onto La Trobe Street. A temporary hook turn will be in place, allowing motorists to exit Swanston Street by turning right onto La Trobe Street.

The Swanston Street pedestrian crossing on the north side of La Trobe Street will not be in use.

The Swanston Street pedestrian crossing on the south side of La Trobe Street will continue to operate with access to businesses, RMIT and residential buildings maintained at all times.

Additional surface works will be required at the location later in the year.
