Swanston street to close next week

Riders will need to set the alarm early next week if they want to get into the city from Princes Bridge and start work on time.

At 9am each day until Friday 28 June the street will be closed to northbound traffic at Young & Jackson between Flinders Street and Flinders Lane as a CitiPower contractor digs up the road to install a new underground power supply.

The closure will last through the day until 5pm.

You won’t have to detour if you can make it through before nine, so don’t spare the horses.

Otherwise, you can turn right or left at Flinders Street and filter through the city on other north-south streets, or you can detour earlier and enter the city via Queen’s Bridge or Cross the Yarra at the Swan Street Bridge. See map below.

Another option is to walk your bike along the block on eastern footpath at St Paul’s Cathedral, although that will be tough going as it will be crowded with walkers due to the current closure of the western footpath in front of the Metro Tunnel construction site.

Riders on Swanston Street outside of the closure hours should note that the trenches will be covered by steel plates.

These works are associated with the removal of the gantry sheds above the footpath along from Young & Jackson, including one which has until now served as the power supply for the site.

There are expected to be further disruptions across the city due to tunnel and tram works during the remainder of the year.
