A key route through Point Cook is getting new and improved bike paths and vitally needed road crossings as part of a major intersection upgrade.
The intersection of Point Cook Road and Sneydes Road has been a dog’s breakfast for years, made worse by the lack of a proper connection between this intersection and the next at the terrible roundabout at Jamieson Way/Sanctuary Lakes Boulevard.
The route along Sanctuary Lake Boulevard, Point Cook Road and Sneydes Road has served as the link between the Bay Trail West at Skeleton Creek and the Federation Trail at Werribee, a mostly OK on-road route except for the troublesome stretch being upgraded.
The new signalised intersection will for the first time provide a safe crossing point at Point Cook Road between Sanctuary Boulevard and Gramercy Boulevard, giving riders who are Werribee-bound an opportunity to turn right across the busy road.
Illustrations show off-road shared paths on both sides of Point Cook Road, although the narrow footbridge over the Cheetham Creek is to be retained. New street lighting is to be provided.
Some side streets will access Point Cook Road via left turn only, but the illustrations show the wrong priority for the shared paths, which should have right of way at these crossings. This is especially important with left turn only configurations as drivers don’t have to look both ways and so won’t observe bike and pedestrian traffic on the path.
As the project is not due to be complete until the end of this year, there is still time for these anomalies to be corrected.
The project is costed at $19.2 million.
The Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne said: “Point Cook is one of our fastest-growing communities and these upgrades will help ease congestion in the area so Victorians can get home to their families sooner and safer.”
