This week is National Student Volunteer Week, and at Bicycle Network, we're celebrating the incredible contributions that students make through their volunteer efforts. Volunteering offers a multitude of benefits for students, whether you're looking for opportunities yourself or know someone who is, here are our top five reasons why volunteering with Bicycle Network is a fantastic choice for students.
- Meet New People: Volunteering is a fantastic way to meet new people and make friends with similar interests. Being part of a volunteer community allows students to build lasting relationships – these connections not only enhance their social life but also provide a support network that can be valuable during and after their studies. According to Volunteering Australia, 85% of volunteers reported that volunteering helped them connect with their community and build a network of contacts.
- Boost Your Resume: Volunteering provides an excellent opportunity to develop and enhance a wide range of skills, including communication, leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving. These skills are invaluable both in academic settings and future careers, helping students stand out in job applications and interviews. According to Volunteering Australia, 93% of volunteers reported that their skills were enhanced through their volunteer work. Volunteering on Bicycle Network events such as United Energy Around the Bay can add impressive and relevant credentials to a student’s resume.
- Give Back to the Community: Volunteering with Bicycle Network offers students a chance to make a meaningful impact in the community by promoting bike riding as a sustainable and healthy mode of transport. By volunteering with our Super Counts program, students can play an invaluable role in improving conditions for bike riders, collecting active travel data which is used to inform active transport policy. Volunteering Australia notes that 91% of volunteers feel that their work contributes to a stronger and more cohesive communities.
- Improve Mental and Physical Health: Engaging in volunteer work, especially in outdoor and physical activities like cycling events, has been shown to reduce stress levels and improve overall mental health. It provides a sense of purpose and accomplishment, boosting self-confidence and resilience, especially during challenging academic periods. The physical activity involved in our events also contributes to better physical health. According to the Australian Psychological Society, 81% of volunteers reported that volunteering improved their mental health and well-being.
- Discover New Places: Volunteering with Bicycle Network allows students to explore new places and enjoy the beauty of Australia. Volunteering on the Great Victorian Bike Ride provides a unique opportunity to travel through some of the most beautiful landscapes in the country, visit charming country towns, and experiencing the diverse natural beauty of the region (with all meals, transport and use of camping facilities included!). This aspect of volunteering adds a sense of adventure and exploration to the experience, making it even more rewarding.
