Bike detour for Whitehall Street

Riders using the shared path along Whitehall Street in Footscray and Yarraville face a two-week detour starting this week.

Those riders that typically use the road heading southbound will also be impacted.

Drainage and pavement works will be underway between Youell Street and Somerville Road from Tuesday 13 August to Sunday 1 September that will close both the shared path and the adjacent parking lane.

During Tuesday night, from 8pm to 5am, the southbound lane will also be closed.

Bikes will be detoured via Parker Street to Hyde Street, where the bike lane has been reopened following an upgrade associated with the works to construct the new bike link on Harris Street.

Looking ahead, there will also be two full night road closures at this location in late August and September when the bridge span for the bike path is erected across Whitehall Street.

Whitehall Street will be closed to all traffic between Youell Street and Somerville Road on Saturday 31 August, between 7pm – 9am and again Saturday 14 September, between 7pm – 9am .

A large crane will be set up on Whitehall Street to lift and install the final piece of the Harris Street walking and cycling path, now in an advanced stage.

Additional construction activities will take place over these dates to complete the works, including final cladding installation and pouring the road deck.

The steel truss will connect the Harris Street walking and cycling path over Whitehall Street to link with a new section of trail that will connect though the West Gate Tunnel northern exit precinct, along the Maribyrnong River to Shepherd Bridge, and then into the elevated Veloway to the Melbourne CBD.
