Volunteer spotlight: Richard Scheurer

We're shining some light on our amazing volunteers who work tirelessly behind the scenes to bring our most popular events, like the Great Vic Bike Ride, to life.

Meet Richard – Assistant Team Leader on our Campsite Services Team.

What motivated you to volunteer with Bicycle Network?

I am a passionate cyclist and have taken part in a lot of events over the years. Understanding that no event can take place without volunteers, it is now my time to give back.

Tell us a bit about your role on the Campsite Services team.

I am an assistant team leader in the services team. I am responsible for the power supply on the campsite. This includes making sure that showers and toilets are working by connecting water pumps and power supply to those facilities. General Power supply for lighting and refrigeration. Ongoing repair jobs to failing equipment.

What do you most enjoy about volunteering on the Campsite Services team?

Working in the campsite services team allows us to meet with a lot of other teams working on the event, and you get a sense of how much is involved to put an event as big as the Great Vic Ride together.

What would you say to someone thinking about volunteering on the Great Vic?

It is a great way of seeing and discovering part of our country, visiting areas that I might not have travelled to on my own. Meeting lots of different people from all walks of life.

What is your most memorable moment of volunteering with Bicycle Network?

In 2019 we started in Robe SA, I was impressed with this particular small town how it accommodated our huge event, and in general the whole route was very spectacular.

Who would be best suited to joining the Campsite Services team?

Ideally, for the services team it would help to have a trade or handyman background. People with plumbing, electrical and mechanical knowledge would be a great addition to the team.

Thank you Richard!

We are in great need of more volunteers to join our Campsite Services Team for this year’s Great Vic Bike Ride, so if you or someone you know are interested, we’d love for you to join us!
