Road safety initiative in Victoria’s northeast

Victoria’s northeast faced with a serious escalation in road crash casualties is moving to address the tragic problem.

Moira Shire along the Murray River, with funding from the TAC, has launched a consultation on a new road safety strategy.

The document will guide council’s decision making in relation to road safety over the next 10 years including investment in infrastructure, new initiatives, community education, transport management, and town planning.

In 2023, Moira Shire recorded 12 road deaths. This year three lives have been lost so far.

The council is undertaking the first phase of community engagement to determine community attitudes to road safety. This is a quick five-minute survey available online until Friday 6 September. www.moiramatters.com.au/road-safety-strategy

The area, which includes the towns of Cobram, Nathalia, Numurkah, Tungamah and Yarrawonga, is a holiday destination and attractive to bike riders.

The council says that while many people think about cars when we say, “road safety”, road safety includes all methods of transport on its road and path network including walking, cycling and other modes of transport.

"As Moira Shire is keen to hear from all road users including visitors to the shire and residents who regularly walk or cycle, we are eager to hear from our cycling community on the important matter of road safety and their perceptions of it."

"This is to support council in its obligations under the Vision Zero and the Safe System Australian National Road Safety Strategy, where the goal is for 2050 to not have any fatalities or serious injuries on Australia’s road network."
