Northbound bike riders along Swanston Street will find the bike lane closed at Franklin Street from mid-October until mid-November.
There is a clumsy workaround: get off you bike, walk to the east side of the street, cross at the pedestrian crossing, walk back to the west side and resume riding to the north.
Because of the large volumes of pedestrians likely to be making the same movement, and the many trams moving through the same congested space, the intersection will likely be chaotic.
The best option will be to avoid riding north on Swanston Street through this section of the city altogether.
Franklin Street will be also be closed, so it will not be an option.
Riders are advised to take other routes to travel north, for example Elizabeth or Peel to the west, or Russell or Exhibition to the east.
Southbound bike traffic will not be impacted.
The closures are due to the increasing intensity of ground level works around the new State Library Station as construction enters the final phase.
Workers will be removing the existing footpath, kerbs and associated infrastructure and replacing it with new infrastructure including utilities, kerbs, streetlight and traffic poles and tree plots as well as footpaths.
Traffic management and signage will be in place to safely direct bike riders and pedestrians around the work sites.
