More than 370 candidates made pledges on the Streets People Love website in the Victorian 2024 local government elections and the group, supported by Bicycle Network, raised $1275 in campaign donations.
The campaign was run by a collection of community organisations calling on nominees to support the creation of safer, more pleasant neighbourhoods that encourage people to walk and ride.
Campaign members included Public Transport Users Association, Mornington Community Safe Link, Disability Resources Centre, Friday Night by Bike, Bicycle User Groups in Merri-bek, Geelong and Geelong West, Stonnington, Port Phillip, Metro East, Boroondara, Yarra, Whittlesea and more.
Streets People Love spokesman Jeremy Lawrence says the campaign received strong support across the state and 494 candidates in 56 out of a total of 78 local government areas completed surveys.
"We were very pleased to see large numbers of candidates pledge to build streets that we can all safely live, work, play and move in. Safer streets are achieved step by step, and depend on continual advocacy from local campaign groups," Lawrence says.
"The Streets People Love statewide campaign has brought many local groups together and increased the strength of our common voice.
"We look forward o working together again for the Victorian state government election in November 2026."
Campaign donations will be used to cover the costs of flyers, social media and website material production.
Voting in the 2024 Victorian Council elections is by post only and closes at 6pm on Friday 25 October. Postal votes must be received by 12pm on Friday 1 November.
