Upfield Trail shared zone revised

The plan to make the section of the Upfield Trail along Batman Avenue in North Coburg a shared zone has been updated and is going through another round of consultation.

The residential street along the rail corridor is cramped and struggles to safely cater for bikes and walkers on the trail, as well as traffic from local streets.

The shared zone concept was released earlier this year and won strong in-principle support.

As a result of feedback, modifications to the original plan have been proposed, including preventing traffic from entering Batman Avenue from Ryan Street, but allowing it to exit, effectively making the block a one-way street, except for riders and walkers.

As a shared zone, the street will be speed-limited to 20km/h, and the surface will be coloured red to make it distinct from other areas.

Solar-powered lighting bollards will also be installed to improve conditions for active transport without impacting on the nocturnal behaviour of wildlife.
