The future is looking brighter for riders through Black Rock following the decision to introduce lower speed limits on two key streets.
Two streets in the Bayside City Council area – Bluff Road and Balcombe Road – both of which intersect with Beach Road, will get 40 km/h zones 24 hours a day.
Works are underway this week to install the signs, so the new limits could be in play soon.
These static signs will be supplemented by eight new electronic speed limit signs to remind drivers of the low-speed environment.
Installation of electronic speed limit signs are expected to start in mid-2025.
In the five-year period ending 31 December 2022, there were 10 crashes recorded along this section of Balcombe Road and Bluff Road.
Five of the 10 crashes resulted in serious injuries.
Transport Victoria announced the decision this week, saying that introducing a safer speed through this high activity area will help reduce the likelihood and severity of collisions and allow pedestrians, bike riders and drivers to share the road safely.
This upgrade has been jointly funded by the Australian Government’s Road Safety Program in partnership with the Victorian Government.
