A 16km section of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail has opened between Bentley and Lismore in NSW, connecting the 30km southern section of the popular tourist attraction between Casino and Lismore.
The new section adds to the 132km project, which starts in Murwillumbah, skirting the NSW northern coast through the Byron Shire and jutting inland towards Casino.
It travels mostly through pleasant semi-forested and pastoral landscapes with some slight elevations and offers pleasant rural views.
The Northern Rivers Rail Trail follows the route of the former rail line which crosses through the local government areas of Tweed Shire, Byron Shire, Lismore City and Richmond Valley Shire.
The 24km Tweed Section of the trail was the first to open in March 2023 between Murwillumbah Railway Station and Crabbes Creek. It exceeded all projections and proved wildly popular among bike riders and walkers, attracting more than 70,000 users in the first four months.
Funding is being sourced for the 62.8km Byron section Yelgun to Eltham and the 20.9km Lismore section, between Lismore and Booyong.
