City Heart consultation
Now that the location of the AFL high performance centre has been settled, the City of Clarence will re-open consultation on its City Heart plan to help prioritise the implementation of the six outcomes.
The plan includes an active transport spine down Bligh Street, which would connect with existing and planned cycling and walking paths.
You can look at the plan again and fill out the online survey before February 2025 at https://www.yoursay.ccc.tas.gov.au/cityheart

Launceston Rail Trail MOU passes
Launceston Council has agreed to develop a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Dorset Council to help progress the North East Rail Trail extension.
Councillor Alan Harris put forward the motion for the MOU, which would include support for a funding bid to two federal programs and council agreement to maintain the trail in their respective municipal areas.
The same meeting also passed a motion from Launceston mayor Matthew Garwood to loan two electric bikes to police for use in city centre patrols.
Hobart green lights crossings and ferry
Two good news stories out of the City of Hobart council meeting last week – the city's scramble crossing trials at four intersections are staying and a new ferry terminal for Sandy Bay is on the cards.
The council will look for funding for signage and line marking for the scramble crossings, and will start consulting on a ferry terminal at Lords Beach.
Transport spokesperson Councillor Ryan Posselt, Hobart talked about both projects on ABC Hobart this morning from 1:38:00: https://www.abc.net.au/listen/programs/hobart-breakfast/hobart-breakfast/104698636

Parliamentary committee & council call for Algona funding
The Tasmanian Parliament’s Public Works Committee has released its report into the Algona roundabout works, “strongly recommending” the government finds the funding to provide safer active transport crossings.
Safe road crossings were not included in the original project designs and, while a pedestrian bridge has now been added, there is no funding to build it as part of the $76.4 million project.
Kingborough Council has also decided to protest the funding exclusion of the bridge directly to the government and parliamentarians and request its construction early in the works to provide an alternative transport option.
Anti-bike lane petition presented to council
The Confederation of Greater Hobart Businesses has presented a petition to Hobart Council calling for a public meeting to discuss the bike lanes included in the Collins Street improvement trial.
If the petition's 1000 signatures comply with the legislation, it will be tabled at the next council meeting on 28 January 2025.
The council has to call a public meeting when it accepts a valid petition within 30 days of the council decision but after a 21-day advertising and submission period, so it's likely to be held in the week beginning 24 February.
