Flinders Street traffic restrictions in 2025

Ongoing construction at the Melbourne Metro underground station entrance buildings in Flinders Street will close traffic lanes until the end of the year.

These restrictions will impact on bike routes through the city.

The large shed at the Federation Square site is to be removed utilising a 200-tonne crane on the road outside; a new station entrance will be constructed.

These works require a closure of Flinders Street westbound between Swanston and Degraves streets until the end of the year.

But first, to set up this long-term arrangement, Flinders Street westbound will be fully closed between Russell and Degraves streets at certain times during the first week.

First week arrangements

The following arrangements will be in place during this phase of day and night works 9pm to 5am on 30, 31 January, and 3, 4, 5 February (night works):
– Flinders Street westbound will be fully closed between Russell and Degraves streets
– Road users will need to detour using Collins Street to continue westbound
– Road users wishing to head southbound on St Kilda Road should consider Queens Bridge
Street or Batman Avenue
– The pedestrian crossing between St Paul’s Cathedral and Federation Square will be closed.

At all other times during this first week:
– Flinders Street westbound between Russell and Swanston streets will be reduced to one lane for left-hand turns onto St Kilda Road only
– Flinders Street westbound will be closed between Swanston and Degraves streets
– The pedestrian crossing between St Paul’s Cathedral and Federation Square will be open.

Long-term arrangements

From 6 February, the following arrangements will be in place until the end of the year:
– Flinders Street westbound between Russell and Swanston streets will be reduced to one westbound lane for left-hand turns onto St Kilda Road only
– Flinders Street westbound will be closed between Swanston and Degraves streets
– Road users wishing to continue westbound beyond Swanston Street will need to detour at or before Russell Street and use other routes such as Collins Street to continue their journey.

During this period bike riders will continue to have access to Flinders Lane westbound and the Swanston Street and St Kilda Road in both directions, unless other works are underway on those routes.
