140km expansion of WA bike network

The Western Australian government has announced funding of more than $16 million for regional walking and riding infrastructure across the state.

The WA Bicycle Network Grants Program funding will see more than 140km of active transport infrastructure delivered over the next four years.

The funding will cover projects from the Kimberley to the Great Southern regions and include tourist trail projects in Kalgoorlie and Wyalkatchem, says Minister for Transport and Tourism Rita Saffioti.

The state government has matched local government spending for up to half of each project. Other local areas to receive a share of the funding include Albany, Bunbury, Augusta-Margaret River and Exmouth.

"Supporting Western Australians to walk, wheel and ride more often relies on a safe, connected and accessible active transport network, linking people with where they need to go," Saffioti says.

"Through this government's record levels of investment, we're making it possible for people of all ages and abilities to choose active transport to move around the state, delivering better connections to public transport, activity centres, schools and other key destinations."
