New bridge crossing for Wagga Wagga riders

The NSW government has announced that the Sturt Highway bridge over Marshalls Creek in Wagga Wagga will be widened to include a new shared path.

The present two-lane bridge is a horror for bike riders, with no shoulder, and is little better for pedestrians as it has just one narrow footpath.

Transport for NSW is replacing the crossing with a longer, wider bridge with four traffic lanes, plus 2.5-metre shoulders, a 1.8-metre footpath on one side and a 3-metre shared path on the southern side of the bridge.

There will be upgraded bridge approaches, and a section of the highway will also be widened to four lanes.

The new structure will be a vast improvement for active transport, including local bike trips, road riders, and pedestrians.

Wagga Wagga is noted as a regional town that has recognised the importance of active transport and has invested in bike facilities over recent years.

The tender to build the replacement bridge is expected to be awarded in June. Meanwhile, early works to relocate electrical and gas services will get underway in May.

Major construction work on the bridge is expected to start in August 2025 and take about two years to complete.
