Work crews are back in Arden Street in North Melbourne to install separated bike lanes into the the final blocks at the west end of the street and complete the upgrade of a major bike artery across the north of the inner city.
Construction will be underway between the Moonee Ponds Creek and Dryburgh Street from now until mid-year.
The City of Melbourne completed the eastern section of the street late last year.
Arden Street connects to the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail and the Dynon Road Trail in the west, and to key routes along Laurens Street, Macaulay Road, Abbotsford Street, Errol Street, and to the Grattan Street route via Wreckyn Street and the the Queensberry Street route via Courtney Street.
Riders will still be able to access the route during works, taking care and following signage and and traffic management direction through the work zone.
Working hours are 7am to 5pm Monday to Friday, with occasional overnight and weekend work as required.
Road resurfacing works will be scheduled on weekends or overnight and require full road closure during works, a separate notice will be distributed.
This stretch of Arden Street hosts the North Melbourne football ground and the swimming pool.
Across the street is the new Aden Station precinct for Melbourne Metro underground rail, which is set for redevelopment to house tens of thousands of residents and workers.
Activities include:
- New bike lanes will be installed next to the footpath, protected from traffic by kerbs and parking bays.
- The bluestone pitcher channel will be reduced in width in some sections where it interferes with the riding lane.
- The road lanes will be reduced from two to one in both directions.
- New traffic islands with plants.
- Green surface treatment to highlight the riding lane at certain locations.

Stage 2 – Fogarty Street to Laurens Street (northern side)
Stage 3 – Laurens Street to Dryburgh Street (both sides)
