Barwon Heads Road intersection upgrade

Riders along Barwon Heads Road at Connewarre will encounter major road works from next month as work gets underway on a new intersection at Staceys and Blackrock roads.

The project, funded by the Victorian government and aimed at improving the safety of the intersection for all road users, is expected to take about nine months.

With Barwon Heads Airport entry and commercial premises nearby, the location has never felt safe for bike riders, especially as the road shoulders are often overgrown and narrow.

The project will include:

  • Construction of new dedicated on-road bicycle lanes, pedestrian paths and refuge on Barwon Heads Road.
  • Construction of a new raised roundabout to replace the existing crossroad intersection.
  • Construction of new turning lanes into Barwon Heads Airport.
  • Installation of new line marking, signage and street lighting to improve visibility at the intersection.
  • Relocation of school bus stops, providing improved parking options.
  • Implementation of a reduced speed limit of 80km/h at the intersection.

From March, crews will be on site from Monday to Friday, between 7am and 6pm, with the possibility of some weekend work.

Traffic management will include lane closures and reduced speed limits to protect the safety of crews and road users.

There may be side road closures, with signed detours where required.
