The Shepparton Velodrome will be further upgraded with the installation of lighting that will allow nighttime activities at the track and new BMX facilities.
This will also enable more use of the planned two-story multi-use pavilion that gives spectators a view of the whole track and can house broadcast facilities.
In announcing the funding, Minister for Community Sport Ros Spence said the new lights mean local clubs can train after dark and the venue can host major BMX events – bringing cyclists and their friends and families to the region.
The project is being delivered through the Labor Government’s Regional Sports Infrastructure Program in partnership with Greater Shepparton City Council.
“Shepparton is a well-known cycling destination, and the new lighting means the velodrome is even better for local cyclists, as well as setting the facility up to host state-wide competitions that bring people to the town,” Minister Spence said.
Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes said the upgrades are providing significant support for local riders and emerging talent and will attract major events to Shepparton.
Shepparton Cycling Club President Brett Lancaster said the club was very happy about the local and state government support.
“These new lights ensure safer conditions for our riders and club members and mean we don’t need to hire additional lighting for carnivals,” he said.
