Tasmania's 1st e-bike library is coming

Tasmania’s first e-bike library is due to open its doors next month, following the City of Hobart’s announcement during Tasmanian Bike Week.

The e-bike library encourages people to take a bike home for up to two weeks to see how it would fit into their lives.

People often baulk at the cost of an e-bike but when they experience how easy and fun they are to ride they understand that they are an alternative to driving.

Bicycle Network has joined forces with the City and Hobart Bike Hire to offer the Tassie first, thanks to a Tasmanian Government grant which covered the purchase of six e-bikes.

The e-bikes are all sourced from local bike shops who’ve provided generous discounts to make the $20,000 grant go further.

There will be a mix of two cargo bikes, two step-through bikes and two top-bar bikes of varying sizes.

All the bikes are commuter/urban models and come equipped with pack racks and lights, with accessories such as child seats available.

Bicycle Network will provide free membership to cover people while they are loaning bikes and the Back on your Bike program can provide people with a skills session to prepare them for riding an e-bike.

Hobart Bike Hire will be the pick-up and drop-off point for the bikes and will check them over after each loan.

The City is registering people’s interest in the library via https://www.hobartcity.com.au/City-services/Transport-options/Bike-ride/Hobarts-Free-E-Bike-Library

People on this list will receive an alert when the library opens for bookings next month.
