Rutherglen has officially opened its innovative loop trails project to lure more visitors to the north-east Victorian wine country.
With 48km of loop trails and connections, the network can get locals and visitors around the key destinations in the district via healthy, active travel.
Everything is within easy bikeable distance by using one of the four loops: Town Loop (4km); Wine Loop (23km); Lake Loop (14km) and River Loop (4km).
There are multiple water and toilet stops, and the region has many options for accommodation.
Started by Indigo Shire Council in 2023, work proceeded in stages until completion late last year at a cost of $5.13 million, fully funded by the federal government.
The area around Rutherglen, Wahgunyah and Lake Moodemere is rich in wine industry history and has been making unique, internationally acclaimed wines for generations.

Senator Lisa Darmanin, who officially opened the Rutherglen Loops, said it would be a game-changer for Rutherglen, Wahgunyah, associated businesses and tourism operators.
“I’m sure this beautiful region will leave a lasting impression on all who use the trail and make it more than a one-off event,” she said.
“Visitors will be able to explore the trails for an hour, a day or even over a long weekend, through the heart of Rutherglen, past Lake Moodemere, or along the Murray River to local cellar doors and producers.
“This is an important investment in tourism, in great local businesses and in a healthier, more connected community.”
Indigo Shire Mayor, Sophie Price, said the network wasn't just about connecting places, but about connecting people.
“It's about providing a safer, more enjoyable way for locals and visitors to explore our region,” she said.
“The trail is providing our residents with safe, accessible paths for daily exercise and recreation, creating opportunities for people of all abilities to experience the beauty of our region.
“It's about encouraging people to stay longer, discover more, and become part of our story.”
