Bollen Road trail secures funding

Mount Barker District Council has successfully secured federal funding to construct a 1.1km shared-use trail along Bollen Road.

The $1.99 million project will connect to the popular Western Flat Creek trail near the intersection of Bollen and Flaxley roads, delivering an accessible route for pedestrians and cyclists in the Newenham area.

The new trail will feature a footbridge and upgraded lighting, enhancing safety and usability during both day and night.

Mount Barker's trail network is one of the district's most popular assets, widely used by locals and visitors for its stunning natural beauty.

The council's General Manager Infrastructure, Phil Burton, said the council was thrilled to receive the funding for a project that will enhance the area further.

"We're grateful for the federal government's support and look forward to seeing the benefits this project will bring to residents, students and visitors alike," he said.

The council endorsed the Bollen Road concept plan in March 2024 and submitted an application to the federal government's Active Transport Fund in January.

The fund provides $100 million over five years (2024–2029) to support walking and cycling infrastructure projects across Australia. As a successful applicant, Mount Barker District Council will receive up to 49% of the total cost of the trail construction ($977,020). The remaining funding will come from the council's general rate revenue.

The trail is just one aspect of a wider council strategy to improve local transport connections, reduce car dependency and encourage more active transport.

"The Bollen Road trail is a clear example of where council is investing to make it easier and safer for people to walk or cycle, while strengthening our commitment to active, healthy and sustainable transport options," said Mayor David Leach.
