The City of Newcastle is asking for feedback on a new plan for its historic civic precinct that includes new and upgraded bike lanes.
The Civic Public Domain Plan proposes a separated, 2.1m-wide cycleway along both sides of King Street between Union and Auckland streets and an upgrade of the existing stretch of on-road cycleway along Hunter Street near Union Street.
A shared zone is proposed along Civic Lane, and shared paths are proposed around three sides of Newcastle Civic Park (on Darby, King and Auckland streets) to link with the existing shared path along Laman Street, bordering the fourth side.
Shared paths are also proposed around Wheeler Place and along Workshop Way, Centenary Road, Merewether Street, a further section of Darby Street and sections of King and Union streets.
As well as enhanced bike riding and pedestrian connections, the plan proposes a new lawn area and event screen in Wheeler Place, a picnic area in civic Park and more green spaces.
City of Newcastle Chief Executive Officer, Jeremy Bath, said the plan will “guide future development with a focus on increasing connectivity between important cultural institutions, while supporting the broader renewal of Newcastle's city centre.
"It's designed to make the area between Civic Park and Honeysuckle more suitable for walking, riding, and using mobility devices, while also adding more green spaces to make the area more enjoyable and keep the city cooler during hot weather.”
Feedback on the plan can be submitted via the council website before 20 May 2025.
