The Collins Bridge over the Yarra River at Gipps Street in Abbotsford will be closed intermittently for three days: Tuesday 20th, Wednesday 21st and Thursday 22nd May.
Works underway at Gipps Street by Parks Victoria to build an elevated path down to the trail along the river require closure of the bridge.
The new elevated path will remove the need for riders to carry their bikes down the old stairway from Gipps Street to the Yarra.
Ironically, this latest bridge closure is to enable new steps to be craned into position to replace the old, detested steps. But don’t worry, bike riders won’t be using them when they have the new ramp available.
There will be traffic control in place this week to stop bike traffic during the crane lift of the stair panels.
The decks of the elevate paths are now in position on the south side of the project.
Drainage works on the south side of Collins Bridge and in the Gipps Street area scheduled soon.
Planting of native species to regenerate the area is well advanced.
