Toowoomba cycle path construction begins
Construction is set to begin on a new cycle path in central Toowoomba, enhancing active transport facilities for locals and visitors to the Queensland region.

The Queensland Government's Department of Transport and Main Roads is constructing a 3m-wide shared path on Karrool Street between Glenvale Road and Goode Street. The shared path will be connected with a path for people walking on Goode Street, including a raised pedestrian crossing for people on Anzac Avenue crossing Goode Street.

The department will also upgrade the signalised intersection for people crossing the road at Toowoomba Connection Road (Tor Street) and Karrool Street.

Additionally, Goode Street between Karrool Street and Anzac Avenue will be designated a 'safe active street', with a new speed limit and road surface treatments to remind people driving to safely share the street.

The Queensland Government has invested $1.31 million in the project through its Active Transport Investment Program, with construction due to start in June 2025. The project is expected to be completed by late 2025.

The news comes as planning progresses for another key link in Toowoomba's cycle network: the Toowoomba Central Active Transport Link, connecting the city centre and the nearby suburb of Highfields.

A concept design has been developed for 5.5km of paths between East Creek Cycleway at Margaret Street and the future Highfields Bikeway at the John French VC Bridge.

This planned link will offer a quieter and greener route to the New England Highway. The project is funded by the Queensland Government, with a total investment so far of $1.52 million.

The project is part of the Queensland Cycling Strategy and Queensland Walking Strategy and is aimed at improving network efficiency, safety and accessibility, reducing travel times and increasing active transport options in the region.

Planning is expected to be completed in 2026.
