The bike semi-trailer has arrived

A radically different cargo bike – so different that it initially defies belief – has been launched in France.

The styling might be retro, but the engineering has been with us for 100 years: a prime mover with an articulated trailer.

The prime mover is you, with a three-speed gearbox, on a one-wheeled bike towing a two wheeled trailer.

How can this possibly work?

Well, the fork and head tube which normally hold the handlebar, hold the seat and also act as the trailer coupling.

Unusually, the bike sports a steering wheel with hand brakes, but the out-front position means the device has a tight turning circle.

Cyclauto, the firm behind the trike, says the design is an ideal urban mobility solution, combining modularity, demountability and efficiency.

"Whether for professional or personal use, it adapts to everyone's needs by offering an ecological and practical alternative to traditional vehicles.

"Thanks to an optimised architecture, it combines manoeuvrability, load capacity and driving comfort, making it perfect for urban logistics, artisans or individuals looking for versatile transport."

The trailer chassis is said to be adaptable for multiple uses from logistics, to transporting pallets, to street-food modules.
