Ararat Rural City Council has officially adopted its 2025–26 budget, which includes a $133,000 council contribution towards an upgrade of the Ararat Active Transport Bicycle Network.
The infrastructure project received $266,000 from the federal government's Active Transport Fund earlier this year.
The combined money will be used to build and upgrade close to 10km of bike paths, a project driven by the council's Ararat on the Move strategy.
This renewed network of bike paths will better connect several key locations across the city centre, including the train station and the Barkly Street precinct, as well as local schools, workplaces, community groups and recreational facilities.
"It's crucial that we invest in infrastructure that encourages the community to lead an active lifestyle, as well as supports economic growth for our region," said Ararat Rural City Council Mayor, Jo Armstrong.
"This project will provide residents and visitors with greater opportunities to experience Ararat's diverse attractions, discover our wonderful local businesses and explore the stunning scenery."
The 2025–26 budget also includes a $400,000 commitment to upgrading footpaths and cycleways across the municipality. An additional $312,232 has been secured in grant funding for pedestrian safety upgrades in the city centre.
The full budget can be viewed on the council's website.
