Mt Coot-tha transformation could include bike lanes

masterplan process has been announced to transform Brisbane's Mt Coot-tha into an eco-tourism hotspot – and potential inclusions include a new mountain bike skills tracks and on-road cycling lanes.

Brisbane City Council’s Sustainability Agency will lead the planning process, which has already issued a list of ideas for exploration.

Mt Coot-tha is a popular destination for road cyclists and one of the ideas put forward is the reconfiguring of Sir Samuel Griffith Drive into a one-way loop road, creating a bike lane for cyclists.

A mountain bike skills development track also makes the list following consultation with 670 residents about the future of the quarry, which nominated more off-road cycling opportunities as one of the desired activities for the area.

Also proposed is the completion of the 170km Brisbane Wilderness Walking Trail, connecting Mt Coot-tha to Mt Archer and installing bush huts, camping sites, picnic areas and composting toilets along the way.

Other potential elements include a Botanic Gardens night-time light show, an accessible tree-top walk, sustainable glamping and nature retreat sites.

The process will explore options for transforming Mt Coot-tha Quarry into a tourism destination after it ceases operation in the next decade.

Brisbane City Council Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the master plan will lead to a long-term strategy to protect Mt Coot-tha's precious native areas and enhance the precinct's existing attractions, including the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium and Summit lookout.

"Brisbane is riding a wave of international popularity as a tourism destination and with the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games coming, now is the time to start planning more to see and do in our city," he said.

"Mt Coot-tha has so much untapped potential and I'm eager to explore ways we can make it a must-do destination for both residents and visitors."
