Rider impacts on Swanston Street

There will be minor impacts at several locations along Swanston Street in the coming weeks.

Northbound riders will encounter intermittent bike lane closure at A'Beckett Street as work continues to demolish the large shed used for Metro Tunnel construction, except between 3pm and 8pm Monday to Friday and outside working hours.

The Swanston Street western footpath will also be closed at A'Beckett Street.

The previously communicated road reinstatement works on the southbound lane of Swanston Street between Victoria and Franklin Streets have been rescheduled to July.

These works will take approximately one week to complete and will include road resurfacing works.

Due to the proximity of these works to the tram lines, some of these works will need to occur outside of tram operating hours including profiling and asphalting works. New dates will be confirmed soon.

Moving to the south end of Swanston Street, the eastern footpath adjacent to the City Square will close around the clock from this Friday until early August 2025, for site access and footpath reinstatement works.

These works will require the closure of the City Square/Swanston Street southbound tram stop. This closure will remain in place once reinstatement works begin at Flinders Lane in late June.

There will be some construction activities which will require the southbound bicycle lane to be closed between Collins Street and Flinders Lane, otherwise it will be open.

A pedestrian detour will be in place via the western Swanston Street footpath. Traffic controls will be in place to manage the closure.

Finally, there will be some construction activity at 253-267 Bourke Street at the corner of Swanston Street where materials will be delivered at night. A gantry will be constructed on the footpath but there will be no vehicle parking.
