Rider charged over modified e-bike death

A man riding what police allege was a modified electric-powered bicycle that struck and killed a pedestrian at Hastings has been charged with a string of offences.

Emergency services were called to reports a pedestrian had been struck on Frankston–Flinders Road about 6.40pm on 12 May.

The pedestrian, a 69-year-old Hastings man, was flown to hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he later died.

The bike rider, a 24-year-old Hastings man, was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives this week interviewed and charged charged the rider with:

  • dangerous driving causing death
  • exceeding the prescribed concentration of drug
  • unlicensed driving
  • use of an unregistered motor vehicle
  • use of an unsafe/unroadworthy motor vehicle.

These charges imply that law enforcement regards such illegally modified e-bikes as motorcycles requiring registration and a licensed rider.
