Gipps Street project partially completed

The north side of the Gipps Street elevated path connecting to the Yarra River Trail at Abbotsford has been completed.

Work on the south side ramps is well advanced but work on the final section has been delayed while drainage is upgraded and an unexpectedly unstable section of the bank is stabilised.

This has delayed completion of the overall project until later in the year.

Although the project removed the original and reviled Gipps Street steps and replaced them with the new elevated path, a new flight of steps has been fitted especially for local step fetishists.

Due to unseasonably dry weather, some planting has been deferred until spring when conditions are more favourable. Areas that are mulched or in a shady position, such as the south side of Collins Bridge, may be moist enough to plant in winter.

Areas that are covered in jute matting or in full sun will require more rain for the soil to be moist enough for planting.
