New link to Dandenong Stadium getting underway

Work will start soon on a desperately needed new crossing and bike connection to the Dandenong Stadium.

Located on Stud Road, the stadium is a major attraction for young people and families from the surrounding area, many of whom choose to walk, ride a bicycle or take the bus.

Unfortunately, the Stud Road entry to the precinct was focused on car travel, and the facilities for other modes were appalling, leading to tragic incidents.

The nearest pedestrian crossing was 850 metres away.

With additional $6.3 million in funding from the Commonwealth Government, the Victoria State Government has planned a two-stage $12.6-million project that will deliver a new intersection at Stud Road and Mcfees Road with new traffic lights for pedestrians and bike lanterns for riders at the crossing.

A key initiative is building a new shared user path for pedestrians and bike riders from the intersection to the Dandenong Creek Trail, which will provide a network of good connections to the stadium.

Better bus stops will be relocated closer to Mcfees Road together with improved street lighting.

The new Dandenong Creek Trail connection will be delivered in Stage Two of the project, which will get underway early next year.

Other initiatives include new footpaths, tuning bans, removal of informal parking spaces and changes to service road access.

The speed limit has already been lowered from 80km/h to 60km/h.

The Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne said: “We know just how important the intersection of Stud Road and Mcfees Road is for the local community of Dandenong North, which is why we’re implementing these safety upgrades.

“Everyone travelling on our roads will benefit from these crucial safety upgrades – whether you’re driving, walking or cycling.”
