Barwon Heads Road works closure

Bike riders will soon be detoured off Barwon Heads Road as the road shoulders close for work to get underway on Stage 2 of the massive project to upgrade the busy route between Geelong and the coast.

A barrier rollout along the Stage 2 section begins in a few days on 20 July 2025, starting the closure of the road for riders and the opening of the detour.

Because of other works on Reserve Road and the Surf Coast Highway, the detour will be mainly along Horseshoe Bend Road and Warralily Boulevard, using bike infrastructure, with the City of Greater Geelong recently improving line marking in key locations.

The bike detour will be in place until late 2027.

Please note that there will also be works on Warralily Boulevard between Horseshoe Bend Road and Barwon Heads Road during this time, likely getting underway next month.

Due to potholes, cracking and patching the road is in urgent need of repair and the City of Greater Geelong has decided to undertake a full resurfacing.

Although these works will require closures of the boulevard, bikes and buses will retain access during the works.

Full details will be provided before works get underway.

See map below.

Stage of the project extends 3.5km between Reserve Road in Charlemont and Lake Road in Armstrong Creek.

The project will build new shared walking and cycling paths and dedicated on-road cycling lanes to continue on from Stage 1.

This upgrade will also:

  • add new lanes on Barwon Heads Road between Reserve Road in Charlemont and Lake Road in Armstrong Creek
  • upgrade intersections at Warralily Boulevard, Central Boulevard and Precinct Road
  • install new traffic lights at Newport Drive and Boundary Road
  • install new pedestrian crossings with traffic lights
  • install new street lighting, road signage, drainage and landscaping.

In the coming months as major construction starts, the project will:

  • install temporary traffic barriers to create safe working areas for crews
  • place temporary asphalt to allow vehicles to keep moving along Barwon Heads Road while the upgrade is built
  • relocate essential services, including electricity and telecommunications
  • clear the site and remove some vegetation
  • set up a works area near the Armstrong Creek bridge in preparation for widening the bridge.

The Federal Government has recently announced additional funding to upgrade a further 2km of Barwon Heads Road between Lake and Lower Duneed roads in Stage 3.

More information on the expected timing and next steps for Stage 3 will emerge as planning progresses.
