Bridge upgrade on Brisbane Valley Rail Trail

The Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads has refurbished the Sandy Creek Railway Bridge, the latest in a series of bridge upgrades along the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail.

The bridge, located approximately 7km south of Esk, passes over Sandy Gully, while horse riders are directed on new paths beneath and beside the bridge.

Its completion means riders on the Coominya to Esk section of the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail no longer need to navigate sketchy tracks beneath the bridge. In wet weather, these tracks would often be impassable.

The refurbishment of the bridge follows the refurbishment of the bridge over Logan Creek on the same section of trail last year.

Both bridges were reconstructed according to the original trestle designs, with the addition of wide decking and railing built using a mix of existing, recovered and new timber.

Following the disused Brisbane–Toowoomba railway line, the 161km Brisbane Valley Rail Trail is an adventure trail taking riders through the striking farmlands, forests and country towns of inland southern Queensland.

Improvements over the years have made the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail a more welcoming attraction for riders of all levels, but it is still largely an adventure trail, and visitors should be self-sufficient between towns.
