Two new bushland trails at Jells Park in Melbourne’s east are now open to the public, expanding options for riders visiting the park or connecting via the wider trail network.
The two new trails are part of a $5.9 million investment to improve the visit experience through the popular parklands.
Parks Victoria had originally proposed one trail – a 5-kilometre loop through the 127-hectare site – but following community consultation a second shorter trail at the lake was added.
The shorter Lake Trail is around 2.5 kilometres and features a new asphalt path, solar lighting, drinking fountains, seating and signage.
The trail loops around the café and modern play spaces and showcases great views of the lake.
The longer Bushland Trail has sections of gravel path, and includes drinking fountains, seating and signage along the trail.
Jells Park has big open spaces for exercise and several picnic areas for recreation.
Jells Park is an ideal destination for riders as it connects into metropolitan Melbourne's trail network at several points.
The main Dandenong Creek Trail runs north-south through Jells Park, linking the Eastlink Track, Scotchmans Creek pathway and the Knox bike track (near Nortons Park).
Minister for Environment Steve Dimopoulos said: “The new shared-use trails now open at Jells Park will provide more opportunities for people to connect with nature – whether it is walking, running or cycling through the park’s many green spaces.
“Thanks to the community’s extensive feedback, the shared-use trails have been designed to ensure as many people as possible can get out and explore nature at their local park.”
