Alpine Shire is considering plans to make a busy bike link – Back Porepunkah Road – more bike-friendly.
The road is a direct link between Bright and Porepunkah and runs parallel to the Great Alpine Road.
But as the highway carries high volumes of fast traffic, riders naturally prefer the less hectic road.
However, Back Porepunkah Road has its own shortcomings for bike traffic and now the Transport Accident Commission has provided the council with funding for safety improvements.
Alpine Shire has a developed some options and is gathering feedback on the proposals.
The council is seeking community feedback on:
- any safety concerns on Back Porepunkah Road
- any solutions to improve safety on Back Porepunkah Road
- the draft recommendations on Back Porepunkah Road.
Key recommendations from the Back Porepunkah Road Safety Strategy include:
- provide sealed shoulders along the full length of the road
- install safety barriers at certain locations along the road
- provide light poles and adequate lighting at all intersections, curves and crossing points over the Murray to Mountains Trail
- reduce the speed limit from 80km/h to 60km/h along sections of Back Porepunkah Road
- provide raised safety platforms at crossing points on the Murray to Mountains Trail.
Taking the five-minute
survey will help the council understand who is using Back Porepunkah Road and identify any safety issues and solutions. The survey closes on Monday 8 September 2025.
