Changes coming for Marine Parade lanes
Transport Victoria engineers are finalising new designs for the controversial pop-up bike lanes that were trialled from 2022 on Marine Parade in St Kilda and Elwood.

The original designs had plenty of supporters, and detractors, in the bike community, and the locations have been the scene of crashes where drivers illegally turned across the path of riders.

Last year there was a consultation to assess the impact of the trial which found there was general support for safety treatments that made Marine Parade safer.

Feedback was generally favourable towards the sections of separated lanes but also mentioned that bollards and kerb separators act as an obstacle and distraction for bike riders and people in cars, and in some instances, make it difficult to navigate intersections and restrict movement for bike riders.

There was also feedback about left turns where the trial infrastructure in place at intersections created conflict between bikes and cars as well as confusion over who had right-of-way.

Transport Victoria says the replacement designs will include:

  • treatments to support people on bikes
  • temporary trial infrastructure removed from the road network, including local side streets
  • new road line marking
  • painted bike lane with increased green areas on Marine Parade/Jacka Boulevard
  • retaining the protected lane on Acland Street
  • increased signage.
Construction is expected to be underway early in 2026.
